TRU is expanding it’s teaching program to support future indigenous teachers as part of the truth and reconciliation commission’s call to action.
Sixteen seats are being added to the Bachelor of Education program in September for indigenous student teachers.
Cohort Coordinator and Instructor at TRU Roxanne Letterlough says new teachers succeeding means their students will succeed as well.
“I’m really hoping that we build a cohesion with the indigenous student teachers so that they are successful,” she said. “And so, by having them being successful and learning how to be good strong teachers then they’ll go back to their indigenous communities or even just their communities in their school districts and then they can support the indigenous students in the public schools as well.”
Letterlough added the new curriculum from the province incorporates indigenous world views and perspectives from Kindergarten through grade 12.
And she says these new teachers will be doing the same thing as any student teacher throughout B.C.
