B.C. continues to have wildfire personnel out of province with conditions still quiet here.
BC Wildfire Service spokesperson Erika Berg says there are 265 personnel in Yukon, Alberta, Ontario and Alaska.
She says only 12,000 hectares have burned in B.C. so far this year, compared to more than 52,000 hectares at this point last summer.
“We have had more than 500 fires that we’ve responded to this season, less than 30 of those are still active. If we compare that to last year, at this time we had responded to 729 and 113 of those were still burning.”
Berg says nearly half of the firefighting personnel out of province, 114, are working in the Yukon, where more than 200,000 hectares have burned this fire season.
Berg points out fire activity in B.C. could soon pick up, with no rain and now hot weather in the forecast.
“We do want to continue to urge the public to be aware of when conditions are risky for fire use. Windy conditions, hot, dry conditions. And even though it has been fairly wet, that a drying trend for a short period of time could influence fuels to be at risk.”
