Paving work is set to begin today on Stage One of the West Victoria Street improvements project in Kamloops.
Capital Projects Manager Darren Crundwell says the work was delayed slightly because of recent rain, but the project is still right on schedule.
“It didn’t hurt the utility work did just last week because we had planned on paving starting July 15,” Crundwell said. “We will do it, but it’s not ideal paving in the rain so we just delayed it.”
“Once we’re all done here, probably I would imagine this week or early next week, we’ll be reopening that piece of Victoria Street in front of City Hall.”
He says there will be an update from city staff soon on an impending traffic pattern change for Stage 2 and Stage 3, once that paving work has been completed.
“It wasn’t ideal to pave in the rain, but we’ve got turf down and trees and curbing and paving in Phase One,” noted Crundwell. “The contractor is on schedule so far, so hopefully we’ve got everything back up to four lanes by the end of the year here.”
Also this week, crews are beginning prep work for Stage 4 by removing the asphalt. That is ahead of crews doing water main work from near Sun Life Financial west to the Overlanders Bridge.
There will be single lane, alternating traffic at times times, and drivers heading down Summit Drive towards the North Shore via the Overlanders Bridge, and those heading towards Summit Drive or Mission Flates could expect some delays.
