Police in Kamloops are asking people to be wary of another scam call in the Kamloops area.
Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says there have been five complaints made to police today, after people got calls from an Ontario phone number.
“And they say they are calling from Service Canada and that the individuals Social Insurance Number has been compromised and then they ask for the person to confirm the last three digits of their SIN number.”
Shelkie added the scammers went on to say that there are charges against the person.
“Other variations are when one person asked for an officers name and badge number, it was supplied,” Shelkie added. “Another person was told an abandoned vehicle had been found in Regina with their Social Insurance Number in it, and that the vehicle had been involved in serious crimes.”
Shelkie is reminding people to not give personal information out on the phone, and to hang up if you get such a call.
“And there’s variations of these scams you know,” Shelkie added. “So yeah, they are creative and they come up with different stories.”
Police say any scam calls can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by calling 1-888-495-8501. If you have been the victim of a fraud, people are urged to contact the RCMP.
