There have been six crashes on the Trans Canada highway between Salmon Arm and Revelstoke in the last ten days.
Two crashes last week were east of Revelstoke, two crashes were near Tappen this past Monday, while two crashes involving motorcycles happened in the last two days.
RCMP Traffic Services spokesperson Cpl. Mike Halskov says these clusters of collisions happen from time to time.
“Never been able to explain why that happens in certain areas at certain times,” he said. “There’s just no rhyme or reason to it sometimes, it’s just purely coincidental and these incidents are not connected in anyway per se, just only by geography, if you will.”
Two people were killed in two of the above mentioned crashes, and the highway was closed in all six instances.
There was another highway closure west of Golden last Saturday, July 20, where two people were killed and four others were injured.
“Highway 1 between Salmon Arm and east of Golden is one of the heavier travelled highways in the province at this time of the year,” Halskov added. “And so we just want to remind all motorists out there that it is busy. Take your time, plan ahead, obey your speed limits, wear seat-belts and drive sober and distraction free.”
Halskov also says it’s important to remember that the highway can be a challenging one to navigate in places with mountain passes and twisty, curvy roads, especially if you haven’t travelled on it before.
