UPDATE: The newly-named Jimmies Creek wildfire west of Savona has grown to five hectares but is now being held according to the BC Wildfire Service.
“But that size will be adjusted when the crews get a chance to do a foot track on the ground there. And that size change won’t be because the fire itself has changed, it’ll just be a more accurate perimeter track,” information officer Nicole Bonnett says.
The cause of the fire remains unclear and Bonnett says fire investigators are now at the scene trying to find a point of origin.
ORIGINAL: The BC Wildfire Service is responding to a new wildfire between Cache Creek and Savona this afternoon.
Information officer Nicole Bonnett says the fire is estimated to be two hectares in size.
“It looks like it’s on the other side of the river there, so I think it’s going to be roughly 10 kilometres west of Savona, but it’s on the opposite side of the river from the highway. It looks like it’s burning in the sort of open grass and sagebrush fuel type.”
She says the fire was called in just before noon and crews are still gathering information.
“What you can see on the (interactive) map right now, as far as geographic goes, is populated based off of information the public calls in to report. So you’ll probably see a change in name and a slight change in location.”
Bonnett says two initial attack crews and two air tankers are on the way to the scene.
