Manitoba RCMP are asking people in the remote community of York Landing to be vigilant as police search for two murder suspects on the run from B.C.
Cpl. Julie Courchaine says police have sent resources to the community after they received a tip that Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod may have been seen near a dump, which came in at 5 p.m. local time.
“Based on the information received, the RCMP immediately deployed multiple resources to the community. Including the emergency response team, police dog services, containment team members, major crime services and air services assets,” Courchaine says, adding the Royal Canadian Airforce is assisting with the manhunt search today.
“We understand that this is a trying time for the community of York Landing, and that there’s a lot of uncertainty. We want to remind residents that we have a lot of police resources in the area, and that our priority is their safety. We ask them to remain vigilant, to stay indoors as much as possible with their doors locked, and to report anything suspicious.”
York Landing is about 90 kilometres southwest of Gillam, where the manhunt had been focused for nearly a week.
Schmegelsky and McLeod, both teenagers from Port Alberni, have been charged with second-degree murder in the killing of UBC professor Leonard Dyck, who was found along Highway 37 near Dease Lake 10 days ago. The two teenagers are also suspects in the fatal shooting deaths of Australian Lucas Fowler and his American girlfriend Chynna Deese, which happened on July 14 or 15 along the Alaska Highway near Liard Hot Springs.
