The Registrar at Thompson Rivers University says there will likely be no problems for students hoping to attend this fall after an issue with provincial exams for grade 12 students.
Mike Bluhm says the Education Ministry is working on a solution, and officials will be reaching out to post secondary institutes when things are back to normal.
“At TRU, we’ll be waiting until we’ve got confirmed results that there’s a fix in place. We won’t be acting on the information we’ve received yet until we hear back from the ministry that it’s resolved.”
Bluhm told Radio NL the majority of offer letters fall have already been sent out.
“The information that’s exchanging between the Ministry of Education and institutions right now is the final grade information. So most students have a spot already. This information will help confirm that spot. So if we need a bit more time to do that, that’s what we’ll do.”
Grade 12 students are often accepted based on marks that reflect their first two terms of Grade 12 work, on the provision that their final marks don’t drop significantly.
With the deadline for final transcripts looming, some students are fearing that potentially incorrect results from the provincial exams could jeopardize their education plans, but Bluhm says if the university needs more time to confirm some admissions, then that what they’ll do.
“Within the coming weeks, we’ll have the updated the information and we’ll go about our regular process. It might just be a bit of delay but I don’t think students would see that,” he said. “We would only reach out to a student if we saw an issue with the final grades that we received.”
“Most students can be rest assured that unless they hear from us, we’re looking forward to seeing them in September.”
Meanwhile, BC Education Minister Rob Fleming says the issue has now been resolved.
