Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Kamloops and the surrounding area because of hot weather still to come this week.
According to the statement, a high-pressure weather system coming from the southwestern United States will hang over the southern Interior for the next few days. The statement affects the North and South Thompson, Nicola, Similkameen, Okanagan, Boundary, Kootenay and several other regions.
In the Fraser Canyon, meanwhile, a heat warning is in place for an area including Lytton to the South and Lillooet to the north. Environment Canada says a heat warning is put in place when temperatures will exceed 35 degrees celsius and overnight lows exceed 18C for two-or-more straight days.
“There is at least a little bit of recovery at night (in Kamloops), with lows of 16 and 17. It’s also dry heat so that’s not quite as uncomfortable as if it were more humid, but on the other hand you’re likely to get more dehydrated,” forecaster Philippe-Alain Bergeron tells NL News.
Bergeron encourages people to schedule outdoor activities at cooler parts of the day if possible, and says to never leave pets or children inside a parked vehicle.
He says a reprieve in the weather is expected by the weekend, when temperatures will likely drop down to the mid-20s in Kamloops.
