A potential location has been chosen for a rainbow crosswalk in downtown Kamloops.
In a report to go to council next week, city staff have picked 2nd and Seymour as the best option, and say installing a rainbow crosswalk there would cost $6,000.
Kamloops Pride president Sam Numsen spoke to NL earlier this spring after pitching the idea to city council.
“This is something we’ve been hearing for years. The community would like to see a rainbow crosswalk in the downtown core. It really is a statement for the celebration of the diverse identities we know exist here in Kamloops. The LGBTQ2S+ community is one that is growing and that is also growing in visibility,” Numsen says.
“If you put it in a really high traffic pedestrian area, that’s where you’re going to have most people see it and enjoy it, hopefully really think critically about what it means to them to be a diverse community, that welcomes LGBTQ2S+ people.”
It’s not clear exactly when the crosswalk would be installed if council approves the plan next week.
There are four rainbow crosswalks in Kamloops currently, one in Lansdowne Village, one at TRU and two at the Kamloops Airport, however there are none on a public street.
