Two weeks after raids of two unlicensed cannabis stores in the city, Kamloops Mayor Ken Christian says people have to realize that if you don’t have a license you’re going to get shut down.
He says you have to get into the legal system and get a license. “Then once you’re operating then you can sell what’s allowed now and after October 17th you’ll be able to sell edibles. That is emerging, it’s an emerging market, it’s an emerging retail sector. It’s no different than liquor. We have very strict controls about liquor and we’ll have very strict controls about cannabis.”
Christian says the situation is a real possibility that people operating these kinds of stores need to be aware of. “We’re transitioning from an illegal market to a legal market. People have to realize, and I have said it many times, if you don’t have a license you’re going to get shutdown. This is what happened. Now they’re in the process of adjudicating fines for those people who were operating illegally.”
Christian stresses that this is all handled by the Province and not the municipality.
