In preparation for a new school year, the Kamloops Thompson School Board held its final meeting Monday before classes get underway next week.
SD73 Board Chair Kathleen Karpuk says they have launched their legacy grant application process for groups like parent councils to apply through for a pot of money to put towards things like playgrounds, cultural enhancement and sustainability projects. “That’s through money that we have earned from our business company bringing in international students. We’re turning a profit with that. We’re now reinvesting it back into the school district. So, parent advisory groups are able to apply for a grant up to $10,000.”
Karpuk says the process is being left open right now as every school has different priorities. “Right now we have $100,000 in grant money that’s available and we’re going to be having two application terms, one this fall and one later this year.”
She adds those applying need to be in contact with their school’s administration. “We need to know what the project is, what the approximate cost is, how much money the pack has raised. And they also need to be talking with their school principal and have their school principal sign off on it as well.”
The board also discussed allowing some of its school facilities to be used during the 55+ Games. It has given the green light for the event to take advantage of places like gymnasiums. The 55+ Games are scheduled for August next year.
