The Superintendent for the Kamloops-Thompson School District says Westwold Elementary will be opening on Tuesday after being closed for the last school year.
However, Alison Sidow says she is concerned as only four students have registered so far.
“The board did pass a motion last spring that if there were not six students in the school by September 30, that the school would close. We really need those families who originally committed to come forward to bring their kids to Westwold,” she said. “It’s a beautiful little school and a lovely community.”
Sidow says a teacher has been hired at Westwold Elementary, and it would be heartbreaking if the school had to be closed down again.
“This particular teacher has a very strong background in music and so I think she will be such an asset to the community,” Sidow said. “If you know anybody out there who wants to attend a beautiful little rural school with very few students and a great student to teacher ratio, Westwold’s your bet.”
Sidow says a number of parents tend to register their children once the school year is underway, and she is hoping that is also the case this year at Westwold Elementary.
If the school were to close down, the students will be enrolled at R.L. Clemitson Elementary in Barnhartvale.
