There were no reported fatalities on B.C. highways over the Labor Day weekend according to RCMP Traffic Services.
Spokesman Cpl. Mike Halskov says that news is excellent but he says there was one serious crash on Friday afternoon – near Williams Lake, when a motorcycle rear-ended a pickup truck.
“The pickup truck was heading south on Highway 97 and had slowed and came to a stop in advance of a legal left turn onto another road. And I guess the motorcyclist, also travelling south, didn’t recognize what was happening quickly enough and rear-ended the stopped truck, and sustained some serious injuries as a result,” Halskov says.
He adds the motorcyclist sustained “significant, life-altering injuries that will require multiple surgeries from which he is expected to survive.”
The highway was closed for several hours after that crash, and Halskov says neither criminality nor impairment are considered factors.
Halskov says he’s hopeful drivers are getting the message about safe driving based on zero fatalities this weekend.
“I’m hopeful, let’s put it that way. Of course we always remind people to drive defensively, obey speed limits, wear seat belts, drive sober and drive distraction-free. And the more often we can get that message out there, hopefully the more often people will take heed to the message and adjust their driving accordingly.”
