The BC Wildlife Park in Kamloops is mourning the loss of one of its mountain goats killed during Tuesday’s lightning storm.
On its Facebook page, the Wildlife Park says the entire team is in shock and disbelief after Gustav was killed in what it calls “one of the worst thunder and lightning storms in years.”
Gustav was transferred to the park in Kamloops in May of 2018, after it was found wandering alone in Kaslo, by the owners of a Bed and Breakfast along Kootenay Lake.
“Gustav was very young when he arrived required bottle feeding every two hours. The BC Wildlife Park’s animal care team worked tirelessly to care for Gustav – ensuring he was fed, well cared for, and eventually ensuring he was safe as he adjusted to his new environment,” the park’s Facebook post reads.
“Although Gustav had a difficult start in life, he was feisty – full of energy and life, and he particularly enjoyed making extra work for his keepers by constantly butting over his water dish.”
The park says earlier this summer, Gustav outgrew his enclosure and was moved into the mountain goat habitat, where he continued to transition from a newborn.
Tuesday’s lightning storm saw about 200 lightning strikes in Kamloops and upwards of 10,000 across southern B.C., according to Environment Canada.
