B.C.’s Transportation Minister is still confident that ride hailing will come to the province this year.
However, taxi companies say the rules set out by the Passenger Transportation Board with no limits on fleet size and operating areas favour ride hailing companies over the taxi industry.
And so, Claire Trevena was asked about a petition from Vancouver-area nine taxi companies to the BC Supreme Court protesting those rules.
“This is obviously something that is going to have to work it’s way through the system. We are very confident that we’re going to get app-based ride hailing in within our time frame.”
She says British Columbians have been waiting too long for ride hailing.
“We’ve had five years of the previous government where it could have come in and nothing happened,” Trevena added. “And now we’re in a position two years into our mandate where we have eight companies who want to apply for app-based ride hailing in BC.”
As for her letter outlining concerns over ride hailing fleet sizes and congestion, Trevena says she was only forwarding issues that were raised to her to the PTB.
