Pennywise the Clown is back on the big screen with It Chapter Two in theatres this weekend and one local Clown doesn’t worry too much about the horror side of things.
Local clown Uncle Chris says there has been a bit of a change over his decades long career in how people view the industry, but most of those negative attitudes come from adults. “I do what I do no matter what. When I am out there, I’m smiling, I’m making kids happy, I’m making adults laugh. I am doing what I love doing and I have loved doing for 20 years.”
He says there has been a small shift in the way clowns have been portrayed over the course of his 20 year clown career. He says the way clowns are portrayed in Hollywood has impacted people. “And I don’t even call those clowns. Those are just scary people dressing up to scare other people. Clowns, to me, are still happy, out there making people smile. But, there is that other end of it and you have to entertain people. But, it’s mainly adults. Don’t take your 5 year old to see this movie… TRUST ME.”
Uncle Chris says he doesn’t have much of an issue when it comes to kids being afraid of clowns, that’s more something that seems to come on as an adult and likely a result of watching too many movies. He also doesn’t wear clown makeup which he thinks helps as well. It’s added that the time of year does have an impact on the way people look at clowns with people becoming more fearful the closer we get to Halloween. Oddly enough though, Uncle Chris’ next gig is set for the BC Wildlife Park on Halloween.
