Westwold Elementary School has enough students for the ongoing year.
SD73 Board Chair Kathleen Karpuk says they were able to get to their minimum requirement.
“Westwold has six students,” she noted. “We’re very happy to say that we believe Westwold will be a go for the entire school year so we’re very happy about that.”
At least six students will need to be at the school on September 30, when enrolment is finalized. If the number falls back below that mark before then, the school will close.
Karpuk says overall district enrolment is up by 118 students and SD73 is adding 4.3 teaching positions in elementary schools this year.
Among items discussed at last night’s school board meeting included the school start up report.
It showed an 88 per cent graduation rate which it looks to increase to 90 per cent within three years. It also showed a 10 per cent increase in aboriginal student graduation rates in the last five years.
Karpuk says they will take on a number of initiatives to increase those rates and the goal is to see parity within the aboriginal student population.
The board also received a presentation on mental health in the workplace. Karpuk says their manager was just wanting to let the board know where things are.
“She has been putting on training and workshops with all of our senior managers and we’ve been working through this as a district,” she said.
“We are training staff themselves on how to look after their mental health. We have resources at every single work site in the district that has information on what resources are available and how people can reach out.”
