Kamloops city council has given support for a private cannabis retailer looking to open in the Brock Shopping Centre.
Councillors have unanimously supported a cannabis sales license application to the province for storeowners looking to set up shop at 1800 Tranquille Road.
Director of development services Marvin Kwiatkowski says this retailer is one of many looking to open on the North Shore.
“Most are more concentrated in the core area, so this is one that’s a little bit further removed. I guess it makes sense simply from the location… Most of these applications have gone fairly smooth through council. Then it goes to the province and that takes a bit of time. So we haven’t had too many coming back.”
City council has now supported applications for 20 retail cannabis stores, including 17 private stores. To date there have been two private stores and two government stores open within city limits.
Kwiatkowski says he doesn’t think there will be many more retailers coming to council.
“We always thought maybe 15 to 20. I don’t expect too many more to come. In the end, how many would I expect to be running? Probably half of that.”
