BC Forestry Minister Doug Donaldson announced a 69 million dollar package to help workers impacted by the forestry crisis this week, but one local MLA is questioning the timing.
Speaking on the NL Morning News, Kamloops North Thompson Liberal MLA, Peter Milobar, wanted to know why the Horgan government didn’t act sooner. “When you go back to the first week, within a week of the Vavenby situation happening, our caucus, our leader Andrew Wilkinson had issued a letter to the premier asking for the province to step in with five areas and most of those were covered off yesterday.”
“The question is, why did it take almost four months.”
“Especially why did it take almost four months to even start remotely trying to talk to the federal government in the middle of an election instead of three for months ago when this was all starting up.”
Milobar added “You know the cynic in me says well Surrey got impacted last week and all of a sudden the province is taking some action.”
“You know it’ll be interesting to see if, as most things seem to happen, the bigger and better package lands on the coast.”
He did have something positive to say about the deal, “But this is a good first step for people. I hope it does help people out.”
“And we will be continuing to press the government, as we’ve had to do over the last four months to take appropriate actions.”
