B.C.’s Forests Minster says new job placement co-ordination offices will have a presence in a number of Interior communities affected by the forestry crisis.
Speaking on NL Newsday, Doug Donaldson says the office will track the transition of impacted forest workers on a case-by-case basis.
“The details of that we’ll be able to discuss more widely next week as we put the team together that will be staffing that co-ordination office,” he said.
Donaldson noted that for the office to have the impact the province desires, it can’t just be located in larger centres like Kamloops or Prince George.
“What we heard back is that we don’t need people who are out of work spending money to travel to bigger centres in the north,” he added. “We need that representation right in those communities most impacted.”
Of the $69 million in funding announced this week, the province will spend $2 million to set up this office.
“I think that’s going to be of great value,” he added. “That’s an area that we have lobbied and see as a prime role for the Federal Government to get involved as well.”
