People of all ages are gathered in downtown Kamloops today to rally for climate action.
Thompson Rivers University student Kellie Sych says dozens of people are taking part locally.
“We feel like government hasn’t changed things and we’re angry, we want things to change. Our environment is worth a lot more than money.”
Sych was asked what the she and others can do locally to preserve the environment.
“I honestly think the best thing is education. I myself am taking the program at TRU for natural resource science, and through that I’ve learned our affect and our impact, and what we can do to try and mitigate that. Such as recycling, composting, it’s easy literal changes, and it’s a point of not being lazy.”
Kamloops-Thompson Cariboo Green Party candidate Iain Currie was on hand for the rally and says he’s heartened by the local concern.
“There’s just people here who care about what happens to the planet. And that’s what we’re communicating. We’re getting lots of response from the people driving past and I am proud to be a Kamloopsian today.”
The local rally comes at the same time as global climate demonstrations are being held in cities around the world.
“This is grassroots – and I am going to use the P word – this is grassroots politics at its best. This is people standing up peacefully but loudly to make their voices heard,” Currie says.
