The federal New Democrats are hoping third time’s the charm as they announced a new candidate for the upcoming Federal election on October 21.
Family Justice Counsellor Cynthia Egli will run as the Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo candidate, replacing Dock Currie, who was asked to step down almost two weeks ago.
“I’m passionate about my community and am committed to making life better for everyday families, instead of wealthy corporations,” she said. “I was raised on the values of putting people first, and that means fighting for workers, families, seniors, students, and those who have been left behind by Liberal and Conservative governments.”
Egli works as a Family Justice counsellor and mediator with the British Columbia Ministry of the Attorney General. She’s also a member of the BCGEU provincial executive and is a part owner of a small business.
She is the party’s third candidate in the riding, after original candidate Gina Myhill-Jones stepped down in August.
On the NL Morning News today, Egli said she knew right away when she was going to run.
“The moment I heard that the NDP didn’t have a candidate I decided that I had to put my name forward for my kids to have some to vote for, for me to have someone to vote for because I love the NDP values and I absolutely love Jagmeet Singh and what he stands for.”
She said after the Liberals and Conservatives representing the riding, it’s time for a change.
“The Liberals and Conservatives have been running this riding for quite a long time and I feel we’re in this situation that we are in Kamloops where people are living paycheck to paycheck and somehow they keep getting re-elected,” Egli added. “So, if we keep doing what we’ve always done we’re going to get what we’ve always got.”
Egli added as far as candidates go, she’s not like most.
“I’m a working class Mom. I am not a politician but I truly believe in standing up for the people around me and helping the people around me and that’s what I’m offering up on October 21st.”
Running against Cynthia Egli is Conservative candidate and incumbent MP Cathy McLeod, the Liberal’s Terry Lake, the Green Party’s Iain Currie, Ken Finlayson with the People’s Party of Canada, Kira Cheeseborough with the Animal Protection Party of Canada, and Peter Kerek with the Communist Party of Canada.
