A new report from the Mining Association of BC says Kamloops is the province’s largest mining community by spending.
CEO Michael Goehring says in Kamloops there are 410 mining suppliers selling over $342 million worth of materials, good and services to the industry.
He says a report released at the UBCM this week aims to give people an idea of how much money flows into B.C. communities.
“Those 17 mine sites and smelters provide about 11 to 12 thousand direct jobs and about $12 billion in economic activity, that was last year,” he said. “Those mines and smelters pack a significant economic punch in almost every community of British Columbia.”
Overall, Goehring says the industry bought $2.9 billion worth of materials, goods and services from supplies across the province.
“In Kamloops, KalTire is a great example of this,” Goehring said on NL Newsday. “They manufacture and repair those big tires for mining haul trucks. Based on their experience and reputation, they now operate globally, in Chile and in Peru. Their success flows back into British Columbia through exports.”
He notes mining is also a major partner with indigenous businesses in BC
“You know that’s helping defer their advance economic reconciliation with Indigenous nations in B.C,” Goehring added. “Last year, 120 indigenous mine suppliers provided our mines with materials, good, and services valued at $265 million. It’s a good foundation to build on.”
The Association also says the province’s mining industry gave $6.5 million in community investments to about 340 organizations in 50 municipalities and Indigenous communities last year.
