An Afghanistan war veteran and Conservative candidate is embroiled in a legal battle with the Canadian Armed Forces over the cost of her prosthetic leg and she’s taking her case to the Supreme Court of Canada.
Captain Kimberly Fawcett lost her leg in a terrible car crash that also took the life of her young son.
The government is refusing to pay the $30,000 for a prosthetic, claiming she wasn’t on duty at the time.
Fawcett wants the SCOC to define exactly what ‘on duty’ is.
Speaking on the NL Morning News, she talked about her battle. “I’ve been very fortunate in that I’ve had a very supportive group around me, my husband in particular who picks my up whenever I fall down or when I feel like crumbling into a little ball and you know, reminding me that I’m strong, I’m capable, competent and smart woman. Don’t let a little failure slow you down or stop you.”
The captain spoke of fighting against a government she also fights for. “This is a difficult one for me. I think it’s a difficult one for all veterans and all serving members who find themselves fighting for benefits or fighting for recognition and you know you just have to sort of dig deep, find the strength within yourself not to give up and to just keep plugging through.”
Regarding her ongoing battle with the feds, Captain Fawcett said. “I don’t believe you have a right to bitch and complain about something if you’re not willing to step forward and be part of the solution. So my run became part of the solution. You make change to help others but you have to be willing to step forward and I was.”
As far as stepping forward goes, Fawcett is running in a Toronto area riding against one of the government members she says are responsible for her situation, former Liberal cabinet minister Bill Blair.
