A survey in the village of Chase is seeking feedback from residents over the future of train whistles through the community.
CAO Joni Heinrich says residents are being asked if they want the whistling to stop at both the Aylmer Road and Pine Street crossings, or only at one of them.
She says it’s after a presentation to council in March asking that train whistles be stopped at the Pine Street crossing.
“So we did a little investigation in terms of what the process is and all that kind of stuff, because we also have this other crossing that isn’t really that far away,” she told NL. “Even if the train didn’t whistle for the one crossing, they would still have to whistle for the other crossing because the infrastructure currently isn’t in place to apply for that one to be stopped as well.”
Heinrich says installing the required crossing gate at the Aylmer Road crossing could potentially cost as much as $100,000.
“Now there is some funding available through Transport Canada,”Heinrich noted. “If we were eligible, it might reduce our cost to around $20,000.”
She says depending on the survey results, village council may have a tough decision to make.
“Say if we get overwhelming support that the community wants this, council will really have to consider, ‘Okay, how are we going to look at funding this?'” she said. “Because right now we’ve got a bunch of other priorities and you know is this something that we need to take one of the other priorities and maybe put it on a different level so we can move this particular issue to the top?”
Heinrich says the survey will be available until the end of this month.
