BC’s Provincial Health Officer has confirmed a first probable vaping-related illness in the province.
However, Dr. Bonnie Henry didn’t say where the case was reported, but she noted that there are several other investigations happening that could all have the same outcome.
“Vaping is turning back the clock on decades of effective anti-smoking efforts and creating a new generation of young people addicted to nicotine,” said Henry, in a release.
The province says only instances that are probable or confirmed will be reported to the public and media. However, the age, sex, and location of the person will remain confidential.
Henry says a requirement for physicians to report instances where patients show vaping-related symptoms was put in place on September 19th. It includes patients who report using e-cigarettes, or related products for 90 days before symptoms onset, pulmonary issues shown on x-rays, and illnesses not attributed to any other causes.
There have been hundreds of vaping-related illnesses reported in the US including more than a dozen deaths.
Kamloops-South Thompson MLA Todd Stone brought forward a private members bill back in April calling for provincial action to address vaping, which the health ministry says is coming.
