Sun Peaks resort is happy to have a new 82 bed facility for its employees to live at while they work.
Marketing Director Aiden Kelly says that definitely has an impact this year in terms of available beds for workers, but more capacity is needed. “We’re currently in plans for building more as well. We’re just nailing down how we can structure it, how it will look, locations, all of that type of stuff and we’re hopeful that next summer we’ll be working on more projects.” He says a lot more is needed, but the resort won’t be able to build it all and there are some community initiatives in the works as well.
Kelly says it’s a good start. “That definitely has an impact for us this year, just in terms of available beds that staff can come in, cause we have no shortage of people that want to come in and work here a lot of people on holiday visas an they’re using it as sort of like a paid vacation to have a great experience in the mountains of Canada and work along the way.” He says the housing shortage is something that tourism destinations are facing around the world. “It’s a tricky one. It’s a hard and complicated situation that requires constant work and progress and innovation that goes along with that to help address it. Last year we made that significant investment and it was about midway through the season when we got that new facility built and up and running.”
Kelly is hopeful that next summer it will be working on more housing projects.
