The City of Kamloops has just finished replacing the lighting in its largest recreation facility.
Civic facilities manager Jeff Putnam says the project at the Tournament Capital Centre took about three months and the building now has much more energy-efficient lighting, which the city expects will have an annual cost savings of nearly $56,000.
“Lighting systems that were in there were kind of the older (halogen) light type systems, and they just generated a ton of electricity when they were on. So what we did this year, basically took all those old fixtures and reconverted them to LED.”
Putnam says the project cost $310,000 but says the city did get a one-time rebate from BC Hydro’s PowerSmart program. which covered $121,000, nearly one-third of the project’s cost.
“The payback on that is less than four years, which is phenomenal.”
He says this fall, the city will also be installing controls to automatically dim those new lights during the day.
