Dylan Garand has been named the WHL goalie of the week for the week ending October 20, after allowing just one goal on back to back wins against Vancouver and Kelowna on Friday and Saturday night.
The 17-year-old recorded a 0.50 goals-against average, and a .980 save percentage having stopped 48 of 49 shots he faced as the Blazers improved to 8-4 on the season.
Garand says the team is feeling pretty good right now, having lost just one game since going 0-3 on opening weekend.
“Something definitely clicked. We all felt it, we are not too sure what it was. But we are going to try to keep it going,” he said. “It’s just a good feeling in the locker room right now. We know that if we work hard for 60 minutes a night, we’re a really tough team to play against. And we can be a really good team. I think that’s going to be a focus for us going forward.”
With roughly one-fifth of the WHL season in the books, the Blazers sit on top of the BC Division, and second in the Western Conference, behind Everett.
“You know there’s been a couple of games that maybe by the end on the scoresheet it looked a little bit easy. But I think in order to get there, the guys have had to put in a lot of hard work,” said Head Coach Shaun Clouston.
“The practices have been energetic. There’s been lots of physicality. It doesn’t just happen. You know they are getting prepared and making it happen.”
The Blazers will try to extend their five game winning streak as they head to Victoria for a pair of games against the Royals on Friday and Saturday.
