The Executive Director of the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association is excited with what he saw in a business case for the new Performing Arts Centre.
Carl DeSantis says the project absolutely has to happen for the downtown.
“This is good in so many accounts. It’s good from the arts, the performing arts. It’s great from the cultural side of our downtown, and our city of course,” he said. “And then you look at the economic impact it’s going to have. This is a fantastic thing, and it’s time to say yes.”
After a failed referendum in 2015, he says he feels there is more support for the PAC this time around.
“This is at the front of many of our conversations. It’s not a when are we going to have it, it’s we must have it for so many different reasons,” DeSantis added. “When you look at the architectural design and the impact that will have, and how well that will fit in with the downtown plan and the overall strategies that we are working on with the city and the other stakeholders, it’s time.”
And as for parking options, he says a parking solutions committee has been reintroduced to try and find a long term solution.
“And I understand now the city has engaged or will be engaging an external consultant to identify what the parking needs may be longer term,” he said. “This isn’t just a case of should we open up another stall on Victoria Street. This is a case where we need to build capacity for businesses to attract and retain their employees going forward.”
