The Kamloops Chamber of Commerce wants to know the concerns of business owners so they’re doing another business walk, this time in Sahali.
The Chamber has been to Vallyview, Downtown and the North Shore, to get a feel for what’s concerning employers.
Acacia Pangilinan, Kamloops Chamber Executive Director, was on the NL Morning News and said one common theme for employers is finding the right people. As for a solution: “I think there’s a lot of different opportunities for us. One would be increasing immigration to BC or streamlining it for people who have immigrated to BC to get their credentials recognized.”
Pangilinan reiterated speeding up the immigration process would help. “We’re seeing a lot of people that come to Canada that have been doctors and lawyers and engineers in their home countries and we need to make it faster for them to get into the work place.”
She says keeping people in the area is another challenge “Another thing we can do is to really keep our grads here. There’s a lot of university students that leave Kamloops for opportunity in bigger centres especially our international students who maybe don’t think there’s a place for them here and I think there’s so much opportunity for the business community to welcome them with open arms and that will help solve some of that talent issue.”
