A new multi-story commercial and residential complex on the North Shore is expected to help resettle immigrants to Kamloops.
The development is a partnership between the Kamloops Immigrant Services (KIS) and Habitat for Humanity Kamloops.
KIS Executive Director France Lamontagne says the project at 448 Tranquille Road is likely two years away.
“I think we can possibly work with the existing building and build up a few floors, and then build a brand new building at the back,” she said. “And also, commercial space to accommodate services that may not be retail. I have in mind a daycare which is a big need in our community.”
She says the plan is to build 30 units on the upper floors, with the commercial spaces on the ground floor.
“If a family decides that they no longer want to live in an apartment setting and want to buy their own home or duplex or singe family house, that’s at their discretion,” Lamontagne added. “But they will be invited to stay in this condominium or apartment for as long as they wish.”
Lamontagne says it is too soon to know what the project could cost as plans still have to be drawn up.
“Where the funds will come from, we’ll explore all possible avenues – provincial, federal, private funds, CMHC, BC Housing etc.,” she noted.
And according to Lamontagne, the KIS Board of Directors have been hoping to add housing to its services for more than 20 years.
