The Conservative MP for Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo says the party’s convention in April is the best place to decide the future of leader Andrew Scheer.
Speaking after caucus meetings in Ottawa, Cathy McLeod says it was the right decision to leave Andrew Scheer’s future in the hands of party members.
“We turned it down this time and we turned it down last time in terms of empowering caucus,” she said. “We believe that leaderships are about the party and get determined through party convention.”
The Conservative Party added 26 seats in the October 21 election, but their the failure remove the Justin Trudeau Liberals from government has led to some people to hold Scheer responsible.
McLeod says it is mandated in the party’s platform that there is a leadership review after an election loss to see if a leader has the confidence and support of the party.
“Andrew Scheer has asked John Baird, who was our former Foreign Affairs Minister to do a review in terms of what went well in the election, but also what didn’t go so well,” she noted. “And of course, that is going to also be an important piece going forward.”
And McLeod says the Conservatives are also calling on the Prime Minister to get the House of Commons back in session so parliamentarians can return to work.
