The province’s Housing Minister is accusing the BC Liberals – and housing critic Todd Stone – of cherry-picking a few numbers out of context, when it comes to affordable housing units.
“[Todd Stone] is using them selectively to spread misinformation and I think that’s very disappointing because that is, well, maybe it’s not disappointing, because that is how he operates,” said Selena Robinson. “He prefers to spread misinformation.”
Stone alleges the NDP have delivered 71 affordable rental units, out of a target of just under 1,600. And he says at that pace it would take a 100 years for the government to fulfill its commitment.
Those figures were from an internal B.C. Housing report that is updated quarterly. The BC Liberals obtained a copy through freedom of information and raised it in question period on Thursday.
“They promised 114,000 units over 10 years, well they talk about the 22,000 units that they’ve ‘delivered.’ This report, black and white, provides an update to this point suggesting they’ve delivered a little over 2,200 units,” Stone added.
He says that report also shows that 59 per cent of housing projects underway are seeing some sort of delay.
On the NL Morning News, Selina Robinson fired back with some strong language.
“And I am going to say bullshit to Todd Stone, because maybe he doesn’t know. I would assume that he would know that when you are building a project, that it is going to take three to four years from putting out the call for proposals right through to cutting a ribbon, that is does take time.”
Robinson says she is comfortable with the timelines the government has when it comes to building those affordable housing units.
The province has promised 114,000 affordable homes over the next decade, and Robinson says there are 22-thousand housing projects either underway or completed across the province.
