The victim in a fatal crash near Thompson Rivers University on Friday has been identified as a TRU employee.
Lucy Phua, 54, was struck and killed at the intersection of McGill Road and University way around 5:30 p.m. on Friday evening.
“I can confirm the individual who passed away was a TRU employee,” said University spokesperson Darshan Lindsay. “Our focus at this time is on supporting family members and our employees, and we will not be providing further information.”
On TRU’s website, Phua is listed as an Academic Advisor.
The driver of the truck remained at the scene and was taken to the Kamloops RCMP detachment for further questioning.
Kamloops RCMP Corporal Jodi Shelkie says that driver is a man in his 40s, and couldn’t say whether or not charges will end up being laid as a result of the fatal crash. She says he was making a left turn when the crash happened at the crosswalk.
She says it was dark and raining heavily at the crash scene.
“There was no ambient light from the sky whatsoever, and both McGill Road and University Drive are lit by streetlights. It’s still a good reminder for all pedestrians to wear light-coloured clothing or even reflective materials when you’re walking at night, and for drivers to especially look when they’re at intersections for pedestrians.”
This was the second fatal crash in Kamloops in less than two weeks; after a hit-and-run crash downtown killed three people, all current and former international students at TRU who all worked a hotel in Sun Peaks, on Nov. 3.
