The mayor of Ashcroft says she doesn’t expect BC RCMP budget cuts to affect her community, at this point.
The RCMP has to cut more than $10 million off its budget, and Barbara Roden says it looks like they will try to cut training and overtime costs in particular.
“I can’t see it affecting us, because we’re already sort of at the minimum staffing required for our detachment needs. We cover a pretty big area here in Ashcroft, in terms of traffic and general duty. We’re already stretched pretty thin and I wouldn’t like any cuts on that front.”
Roden says she’s hoping to talk to the detachment commander and find out more about the proposed cuts.
“It looks like they’re going to be trying to cut some training and overtime costs and things like that to avoid impacting especially the rural communities. Communities under 5,000, we don’t pay the policing costs the way you do in Kamloops or Vancouver or Surrey.”
Municipalities with less than 5-thousand people pay 30 per cent of policing costs while those with more than 5-thousand people pay much more at 70 per cent.
