A high school student was robbed in downtown Merritt this morning while walking to school.
In a letter to parents, the Nicola-Similkameen School District says the RCMP responded right away when the robbery happened and says the student was not physically hurt in the incident.
Superintendent Stephen McNiven says the school district is working with police.
“We would like to remind everyone in our community to be aware of your surroundings when in the community, to remain on main streets, and whenever possible to travel with others,” the letter to parents reads.
“We ask that you talk to your children about their experiences at school and in the community and bring forward any questions or concerns that you may have.”
McNiven says it’s not believed the attack was targeted, and says the student had a debit card stolen.
“In general, our kids get to-and-from school safely on a daily basis, and it’s just always good to remember that we’ve got some safety precautions that we can take place. And you know what, if students or parents are seeing something that’s concerning, I think another good message is to make sure that they’re reaching out. Either to the schools or to RCMP to let us know.”
Anyone with information on this morning’s incident is asked to call police.
