The Big Little Science Centre is hoping to be open in its new home in downtown Kamloops by January if all goes to plan.
Executive director Gord Stewart says the organization now has the keys for the building, at 458 Seymour Street but still has some work to do.
“We’re in the process of getting it ready to move in. As of right now, we’ve taken a few things out, parts of walls and stuff. It is a big open space but we still have to do a little bit of renos. So we’re going to… build in some proper washrooms, put some walls up. Then it’s back to moving everything back in there.”
“It’s still a little bit iffy… There’s some things we’re finding that are different than what the drawings had, as usual renovations go. When you start to look into things, you find things. It’s still not 100 per cent on when we’re going to be finished up renovating.”
In the meantime, the centre is still operating as normal off-site with classes and participating in community events.
Stewart expects the reno cost to be about $400,000 dollars, and he says the organization is looking for donations and plumbing and framing materials.
The centre was forced to move out of its former home at Happyvale Elementary after shuffling that ensued in the wake of the fire at Parkcrest Elementary on Sept. 5.
