The mayor of Kamloops says he doesn’t think the provincial government is doing enough to provide adequate policing to rural B.C.
Ken Christian says he has brought that concern to Solicitor General Mike Farnworth as well as regional RCMP commanders, saying rural police resources are not adequate.
“The T’kemlups detachment looks after Sun Peaks. They also look after Savona, Tobiano, Sun Rivers and we’re seen the growth that has experienced in all of those areas and there’s been virtually no growth within that rural detachment,” he says.
“It’s something that I am getting increasingly shrill about, when I am talking to the provincial government because I don’t believe that they have done enough in terms of those protections for rural British Columbians.”
Christian says taxpayers in urban centres like Kamloops also shoulder a burden to send resources to rural areas.
He also says that RCMP record keeping is not up to snuff either to show when there are officers in rural areas.
RCMP costs in Kamloops are expected to rise by $928,000 next year, which is a large part of the proposed increased spending by the city in 2020.
