ICBC is kicking off its annual CounterAttack campaign this weekend.
Road Safety Coordinator Aileen Shabata says the goal as always is to prevent impaired driving on BC’s highways over the holiday season.
“Throughout the province, an average of 68 people are killed in crashes involving impaired driving,” she said. “ICBC and police across the province are encouraging drivers to be responsible.
Shabata says drivers who are caught can face driving suspensions, hefty fines and insurance premiums, jail time, while their vehicle will also be impounded.
“There are a lot of financial penalties but you know, there is the emotional toll should you hit somebody if you are impaired and injure them,” she added.
“We just want to encourage drivers, if you plan to drink to please leave your car at home, because there is really no excuse nowadays to drink and drive.”
She notes police will be out and about looking for impaired drivers at CounterAttack road checks throughout the holiday season.
