The Artistic Director at the Western Canada Theatre says a Performing Arts Centre will go a long way in bringing bigger plays like The Sound of Music to Kamloops on a regular basis.
Speaking on the NL Morning News, James MacDonald says a new facility will be an upgrade to the Sagebrush Theatre, which he says has served this community well.
“April 4th, it’s coming down the pipe,” he said, referencing the date of the referendum. “We reached the capacity of the Sagebrush with a show like this in terms of the fly towers, in terms of the sound all of those things. That’s another reason why that Centre for the Arts will be such an important thing for us.”
With over 10,000 tickets sold to date, MacDonald says The Sound of Music has the potential to be the biggest ever production for Western Canada Theatre, a record which was set by Elf the Musical last year, when just over 12,000 tickets were sold.
“The tickets are flying off the shelves, people cannot wait to see this show. It’s one of the biggest shows we’ve ever done at Western Canada Theatre and it is unbelievably impressive,” MacDonald added.
“The costumes are beautiful, the sets are beautiful, the cast is amazing – there’s 24 people on the stage, and the singing is truly, truly remarkable.”
The Sound of Music opens today, Nov. 28, and will run until Dec. 10.
