During a community protective services committee meeting this week, RCMP reported a 3.5% increase in property crime during the first nine months of this year compared to the same time last year.
Kamloops Mayor Ken Christian says it is an unfortunate reality.
“I think the issue specifically there was crimes of opportunity which are largely fueled by the necessity for people to find money for drugs. We have to realize as both homeowners and business owners in this community that it’s not like it was 20 years ago. You can’t leave your car unlocked and if you have an alcove behind your business you can expect to find all manner of illegal activity going on.”
Christian says the increase is something everyone needs to be aware of.
“RCMP, through their outreach programs, are going to be talking to businesses and neighbourhoods about those kinds of physical barriers you can put in place and those additional securities that we need to take. It is unfortunate, but it is a reality.”
He says we need to get prepared here in Kamloops just like is happening in larger centres.
