Update – Drive BC says the highway is now expected to open around 4 p.m.
Original – Revelstoke RCMP say two semis collided head on at Albert Canyon, about 40 kilometres east of Revelstoke, around 4:30 a.m. today, which has led to the closure of the highway.
Both drivers were pinned inside and had to be extricated by firefighters. They were both taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries.
Police say weather was likely a factor as heavy snow had been falling overnight. A snowfall warning is still in place today for the Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass.
The highway is expected to reopen at 2 p.m. according to DriveBC.
As well, Highway 1 will be closed between Sicamous and Revelstoke for avalanche control work between 12 noon and 2 p.m.
