The Independent Investigations Office won’t be recommending charges against an officer after a motorcyclist was injured in a crash while fleeing from police.
In a decision ruling released today, IIO Chief Civilian Director Ron MacDonald says the crash happened on May 18 just after 8:30 p.m., where a motorcyclist was pulled over on Highway 1 in Kamloops, but as the police cruiser pulled in behind him, he merged back onto the highway and sped off. Shortly after, the biker hit a median and crashed and broke his ankle.
MacDonald says the police cruiser did not pursue the biker at high-speed but did follow at normal speed and stopped at the crash scene. He says the motorbike was later deemed to be stolen. Another officer in an RCMP cruiser also had witnessed the biker “weaving through traffic” before crashing.
MacDonald says after analyzing statements, notes, photographs and other evidence, no charges will be pursued against the RCMP officer involved.
The identity of the motorcyclist has not been provided, and it’s not clear if charges have been or will be laid in connection to the incident.
