Merritt RCMP say a man from Kamloops and a man from Kelowna have been arrested after trying to steal a car in Colletville on the weekend.
Cpl. Brock Hedrick says police were called early Friday evening after a resident heard a loud noise in his driveway and saw a man walking from the scene. He says the ignition on the resident’s vehicle had been tampered with.
Hedrick says police tried to stop the suspect on the bridge at Voght Street, who was in a different vehicle, and that person avoided the road stop by climbing the sidewalk, damaging a railing and stopping on a no-post.
That driver was taken into custody without incident, and a second man believed to be involved with the vehicle tampering was arrested about an hour later.
Police have recommended several charges and both suspects remain in custody.
The arrests come after a warning was issued by Kamloops RCMP for vehicle thefts, with more than one stolen vehicle per day reported in the past two months.
