A Kamloops councillor wants the city to endorse a proposal for permanent funding for sexual assault clinics.
Dale Bass is asking for councillors to send a letter of support for the proposal which has been spearheaded by the Victoria Sexual Assault Counselling Centre.
“Particularly so that better services can be provided. It’s kind of like a one-stop clinic if you will, where a person presents him or herself at ER, the triage nurse can call and get somebody over there to help somebody through the entire process.”
Speaking on the Jeff Andreas Show, Bass says the Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre offers evening and weekend service, but she says the funding for the local service is not sustainable.
“In the case of the Kamloops centre, they’re doing this all off the side of their desks. They’re staffing the phone line that they have, and the consulting that they do with patients, with volunteers. There’s not one staff member dedicated to running this program. They’re making it happen because they believe in it. Other centres are in the same boat. There’s no sustainable funding that will fund it properly.”
A notice of motion from Bass will go before councillors tomorrow, asking to write a letter of support for the proposal for government funding for the service.
