Kamloops RCMP say charges are expected to be recommended in connection to a downtown crash that killed three international students last month.
Superintendent Syd Lecky was asked for an update on the crash from Nov. 3, which claimed the lives of three students from Nigeria.
“That is an active investigation, and we have identified a driver. I have great confidence that we’ll be able to bring that investigation to a conclusion and have something before the courts, or at least the Crown for consideration.”
The other vehicle in that crash was a truck that blew through a stop sign according to police, and the driver fled the scene.
A suspect was arrested the same day but was later released without charge.
“Very tragic. I actually had a personal connection, because I do know a student who was supposed to be with them that night. And also I get to sign off on letters of support for the families to come over and claim their loved ones. So it did touch me perhaps more than it would otherwise.”
Lecky says November was a tough month for Thompson Rivers University, after four international students were killed in two car crashes – the second being a crash on the Coquihalla near Hope on Nov. 12 – and a fatal crash where a TRU employee was killed after being hit by a vehicle when crossing the street just off campus.
“And I think the pedestrian (motor vehicle incident) in Aberdeen was also a student. It’s been a really tough year, let’s hope that’s the end of it.”
