The city of Kamloops downtown plan – a list of things to consider doing in the new year and beyond – was released this week and one councillor wants to see changes to the layout of the city’s center.
The plan includes the proposed Performing Arts Centre and turning 4th Ave into a pedestrian plaza between Lansdowne and Seymour streets.
While on the NL Morning News, Denis Walsh said another thing on the list he’d like to see is one way streets become a thing of the past.
“To grow our city, I mean you would never design a downtown core in a linear way ten to twelve blocks down, which is what we’re doing, you need to do it in a box,” he said. “Generally the rule of thumb is around 400 metres people will walk so you need to have box. So, the only way we can do that is to make Seymour street a two way.”
Walsh went on to say that one way streets “don’t lend themselves to retail at all.” noting the city has blocked ourselves in.
“It’s almost like two moats along side Victoria street because it’s really difficult to have a successful retail business on an arterial, almost like a highway passing through your city.”,” added Walsh.
“So, I mean there’s evidence, there’s stories all over the place to prove that.”
