Out of the Cold Kamloops has a new home after months of searching.
The shelter program will move into the Canadian Mental Heath Association building at 857 Seymour Street from January until the end of March.
Executive Director Lena Cimmarrusti says they hope to get going on Jan. 5, with the shelter open on Wednesday and Sunday nights for now.
“Right now we don’t have the staff, the funds, or even the volunteers to [go beyond that],” she said.
“When were at St. Paul’s, they didn’t have room for us more than two days a week, so we’re hoping that now that we do have a facility that they don’t mind if we use it everyday, we can add start to add days, but it’s a little early to tell whether we’ll be able to do that.”
She says Out of Cold would typically runs from November until the end of March, but they were in a holding pattern until now without a home.
“They were looking since last May for a spot. We just got one now,” she added. “I’m going to start looking right away for next year. Otherwise, we won’t have home next year either.”
Cimmarrusti says they’re also looking for volunteers, and will be hosting an information session this Saturday afternoon between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., at St. Paul’s Cathedral.
“The program is also in need of some help with preparing dinners for shelter guests in January, and we ask any local groups willing to provide meals next month to contact us,” she added.
